Sheer curtains are one of the hottest curtain trends of 2020. Maybe it’s because we want to feel in touch with the outside world while social distancing within our homes. Or maybe we just love the look of these fun and flexible curtain styles to go with the DIY décor that brings our homes to life.
Whatever the reason you want to make sheer curtains part of your home décor this year, our style guide will help you find the perfect match for every room of your home.
Inside or Outside?
Whether you make the sheers curtains the first layer (near the window) or the second layer depends on personal preference and today’s curtain trends. Either style can look exceptional in any room of the home.
If you plan to use sheers to offer privacy when your heavier, room darkening curtains or drapes are open, it’s easiest to hang them closest to the window. Then you merely open your drapes to reveal the sheers. They act as, literally, another layer of style in your home décor. Try this look in your bedroom to easily close room darkening drapes in the evening for a peaceful night’s sleep.
On the other hand, you can achieve a fabulous layered look by hanging sheers over darker curtains. Textured sheer or semi-sheer drapes look stylish over a solid, dark-colored drape.
How Many Sheers?
If you’re using sheers to offer privacy while blocking light, you might opt for a single sheer curtain in the center of the window, flanked by opaque curtains. If you want to open the sheers, as well, you’ll want two curtains in the center for a symmetrical look when you pull them open.
Likewise, the number of opaque curtains you’ll need for the top layer depends on if you intend to close the drapes or keep them open at all times. If you plan to close them, you’ll want curtains that span twice the width of your window.
On the other hand, if you never intend to close the drapes, you can use a single drape on either side, with the sheers covering the rest of the window.
Hanging Solids and Sheers Together
Keep in mind, in most cases, you’ll need double hung curtain rods (or two separate rods) to hang sheers and solid curtains together. The curtains closest to the window should hang on the lower rod.
However, you can also create a layered look on a single curtain rod by hanging sheers in the center and opaque curtains on the outside.
Double Up on Sheer Curtains
Add a formal flair to your room by doubling up on sheer curtains. For a large picture window or bay window, hang sheers closest to the glass. Then hang another set of coordinating or matching sheers on the ends and tie them back. You can also hang another set in the center and tie them together in the middle of the window.
Play with different layers of coordinating colors to add interest. Or choose sheers of the same color with a different texture or pattern. For a coordinated, pulled-together look, ensure your curtain ties match at least one of the sets of sheers.
Give Your Room a Fresh New Look
Layering sheer and solid curtains is one of the easiest DIY décor tips to give your room a whole new look. Consider choosing curtains in the same color family, or complementary colors for a fun and whimsical look.
Best of all, when you’re ready for a change, you can save money by switching out just one set of curtains or simply by altering the order you hang the curtains. Sheer window coverings are one of the most flexible curtain trends of the year.
